A chiropractor is a doctor who specializes in the treatment of the neuromusculoskeletal system (nerve, muscle, and joint). Your chiropractor will assess and treat health conditions related to the spine and joints, first taking a thorough history and examination of the area. Once a diagnosis and plan of treatment is discussed with you, a chiropractor may utilize a variety of techniques including spinal manipulations (adjustments), joint mobilizations, muscle therapies (including myofascial release, and Active Release Techniques), acupuncture, electrotherapy, ultrasound, shockwave, laser, exercise and nutritional programs. Some chiropractors may have a special interest and training in areas such as sports injuries, pediatrics, rehabilitation, radiology, and nutrition, thereby increasing their scope of practice.
Research has shown that chiropractic care can be very effective in the treatment of low back pain, neck pain, headaches (including migraine), sciatica, and hip pain. Other conditions that a chiropractor may help with include: elbow pain, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries, knee pain, postural disorders, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, and foot pain. A chiropractor undergoes a minimum of 7 years of post-secondary education and extensive national and provincial examinations, with annual continuing education requirements, in order to practise in Canada. Your chiropractor will work hard to get you out of pain and back to optimal health!
